How to Hire the Right Lawyer
for Your Business
It's not "if," but "when."
Not just because you might get sued; a lawyer experienced in your particular industry not only helps solve problems, but can improve your contracts contracts, speed up collections, and assist in a variety of other matters that involve protecting yourself and making sure that you achieve the best outcomes.
It may be tempting to retain an attorney who once represented you in a non-business-related case, simply because you were satisfied with his or her services. But don't be lulled into believing that all good lawyers are qualified for all types of cases. To ensure good results, you need the right lawyer for the job.
Seven Tips to Find the Right Lawyer
2. Make sure the lawyer gives you adequate time and attention. If he or she seems to be in a hurry or is distracted, move on. Don't waste your time with a lawyer who "doesn't have time" for you.
3. Ask the lawyer to describe cases like yours that he/she handled in the past. This doesn't guarantee an outcome (nothing does), but it will give you a good idea of what to expect. Watch out for over-generalizing statements such as, "it's the same for every business." It rarely is.
4. Consider the road ahead. Ask the lawyer about the types of problems that will likely come up, and how the lawyer can help you to avoid them.
5. You shouldn't need a translator. A good lawyer will explain the complexities in ways that you can comprehend. If he or she can't communicate with you, you'll be less able to participate in your own case. Don't be at a disadvantage; find an attorney who will speak plainly and help you to learn about the legal issues affecting your business.
6. Make sure you're clear about the rate and payment structure. Don't agree to representation without knowing what each item costs, such as contract reviews and drawing legal paperwork.
7. Don't hire a lawyer you dislike. It's best if he or she has a personality that you're comfortable working with. After all, you'll be trusting this attorney with your business!
